It shoots for art house, but is never really all that profound or compelling. Lacking any opportunity to connect with the characters, the movie collapses into 2-D goofiness reminiscent of Superjail! or Ren & Stimpy's Space Madness episodes.

Interesting premise, but not entirely original: social outcasts are given a devil's bargain to undertake a dangerous mission (proscribed by a state entity with control over people's lives) with unknown outcomes in return eedom/clemency/escape, etc. This movie is going to be frustrating to people who prefer linear story lines that allow the viewer to make clean linkages between scenes, characters, motivations behind actions, and a neat ending that ties up all the loose ends. Much like Under The Skin, Arrival, The Fountain, and 2001 A Space Odyssey, High Life is going to require the viewer to infer the central plot from disjointed flash backs along the story line arc, and be comfortable with ambiguity intended to allow each viewer to draw their own conclusions. The pace is slow and dwells frequently on conflicts from which I could only assume the director's motive was to build tension in the viewer to reflect what grows within each character over time (years) as they come to grips with their reality. and the likely outcome of their mission. Even though the story takes place on an interstellar ship on its way to a black hole many light years away from Earth, this is a drama centered on how individuals cope with circumstances beyond their control and loneliness. Only Robert Pattisions character has something in his life, on that ship, to give him love and hope.

The sound design is dynamic, acting as a third actor (or greek chorus) throughout, setting up action, red-herrings and the like with aplomb. Willem Dafoe staggers, farts, and screams with all the fury of a typhoon. Pattinson is at his best, disappearing in his role completely. Great, confounding stuff here.

The lighthouse what. The Lighthouse is more of an experience than a story told in film. It was to be expected from the director of the Vvitch.
Eggers is all about audio-visual experience and immersion rather than a cohesive story and a well-structured film.
The Lighthouse had great cast and authentic dialogue (though I had to watch it with the subtitles since English is not my mother tongue and all the jargon and slur wasn't easy to understand.
The location was neat, yet it never felt established enough (maybe this was the intention, but everything felt completely disconnected.
Story-wise it never felt coherent and complete in the end, more like lots of elements and subplots mixed together with an ending straight our of mythology (it also got a little repetitive by the end.
It felt like the intention was to make a movie about men, their habits, deeds, fears and struggles streamlined.
I think Eggers had succeeded even though the ending felt a little out of place (and the mythology element felt disconnected.
The Lighthouse is definitely a thing to experience, a good watch.
P. S. I don't think it was necessary to make this in Movietone 19:16 aspect ratio though.
